If you’ve ever wondered how your graphic designer decided upon their font recommendation, it may interest you to know that there are definitely some favourites when it comes to fonts used by graphic design professionals.

These are the top four fonts used by design professionals…

Helvetica

It’s been around for almost 60 years and without a doubt is the most widely used font (it’s even had a movie made about it).  Helvetica is arguably the most recognisable font used by design professionals with its distinctive, professional and timeless typeface as appealing today as it ever was. It does have its critics, with some feeling it is spaced too tightly but its versatility will no doubt have professionals continuing to favour its use.

Trajan

Trajan dates back to 1989, where it was design by Carol Twombly for Adobe. The design was based on Roman square capitals as used for the inscription at the base of Trajan’s Column (which is where the typeface got its name). You may have seen this font featured on Hollywood movie posters or anything related to law, religion, marriage or the past.

Garamond

Whilst there are many versions of Garamond, the most popular version used by design professionals is the Adobe Garamond (featured below) which was first released in 1989. Garamond typefaces offer elegance and readability, making them suitable for a wide range of applications such as magazines, textbooks, websites and long bodies of text.

Futura

Design professionals are fond of the Futura font for use in large displays, logos and corporate typefaces – as well as in books where small text is needed. It is representative of the Bauhaus design style of 1919-1933 with its geometric shapes (near-perfect circles, triangles and squares). Whilst this font again has its critics, it does remain a favourite amongst design professionals due to its appearance of efficiency and forwardness.
