Kwik Kopy Darling HarbourMatthew Penfold, a fifth generation member of the famous Penfold printing family and Kwik Kopy Board Member, has announced the purchase of Kwik Kopy’s Darling Harbour store, keeping the Penfold tradition alive in the heart of Sydney.

In a move that showcases Penfold’s confidence in the Kwik Kopy brand, Penfold has acquired and will run the store with his partner Genevieve Rechner.

With a history dating back to the 1800s, the Penfolds have long been a fixture in the printing industry. Sentenced to seven years transportation in 1823 for stealing tea, a young book-binder William Moffit arrived in Sydney in 1827. In 1830 he started a small stationery business which grew to become WC Penfold. The Penfold family went on to acquire the Australian Kwik Kopy master franchise in 1983.

Many Sydneysiders are familiar with the Penfold name, having seen the famous WC Penfold delivery horse and cart delivering goods to customers throughout the CBD from 1947 to 2005.

One of Penfold’s initiatives will be to reimagine the historical WC cart in a modern context, with the purchase of an electrical bike to be used to deliver goods throughout the Darling Harbour area.

Penfold aims to re-energise local businesses and introduce an array of new and innovative design, print and digital communications services to the Darling Harbour and Bays Precinct business community. Penfold’s goal is to draw on the Penfold family tradition, while bringing a modern outlook.

“The Penfold name has long been associated with a proud tradition of bringing printing and stationery services to Sydney. This is something we’re extremely passionate about, especially when it comes to exploring the many innovative solutions that complement print including web and digital.”

Penfold’s belief in the Kwik Kopy brand is evident through the recent purchase.

“We made the decision to invest in a Kwik Kopy Printing Centre for the same reasons as many owners do – because it is a valuable business, with excellent opportunities.”

“We’re thrilled to be joining the team at the Kwik Kopy Darling Harbour store, which has long been an extremely successful and strong business.”

Penfold has worked in the Kwik Kopy business since 1987 in various roles including Sales Representative, Centre Manager in the UK, COO, MD and CEO of Kwik Kopy Australia. This will be the first time Penfold has owned a Kwik Kopy store.

Penfold and Rechner have approached the purchase at “arm’s length”, having closely assessed the opportunity prior to purchase and by undergoing the comprehensive application process conducted by Kwik Kopy Australia in order to acquire the franchise.
